Mr. Brushable Stain Blocker roller bottle for covering Sharpie and crayon on walls

How to Cover Sharpie, Permanent Marker and Crayon on Walls (So It Doesn't Bleed Through)

You found it: a Sharpie masterpiece on the hallway wall. Your first instinct is to grab the leftover paint and cover it. Don't. Permanent marker, ink and crayon bleed right back through regular paint, sometimes within hours. You'll paint it two or three times and still see a ghost of it.

The fix is a stain-blocking primer. Here's how to do it right.

Why regular paint doesn't work

Marker ink and crayon wax are designed to stick and stay visible. Water-based wall paint partly dissolves the ink and lets it migrate up into the new coat. That's why the drawing "comes back." A stain-blocking primer seals the mark in first so it can't travel into your top coat.

Step 1: Remove what you can

  • Crayon: scrape off any raised wax with a plastic card, then wipe with a damp cloth.
  • Marker and ink: wipe gently with a damp cloth to lift anything still on the surface. Don't scrub hard enough to damage the paint.
  • Let the wall dry.

Step 2: Seal it with stain blocker

Roll one coat of stain-blocking primer over the mark, slightly past its edges. One coat covers most marker, crayon, ink and water stains. Very dark or heavy marks may need a second coat. Let it dry.

Mr. Brushable Stain Blocker has the roller built into the bottle: pull off the cap, squeeze and roll. No tray, no roller to wash, no can to open for a spot the size of your hand.

Step 3: Paint over it

Stain blocker is white. If your wall is white, it may blend on its own. Otherwise, finish with your wall color. Use your leftover paint, a touch-up roller bottle in a ready-made shade, or get your exact wall color matched.

Quick answers

Can I just use more coats of paint? It rarely works. The ink keeps bleeding through. Prime first.

Does this work on ceilings? Yes. The same method covers ceiling water stains. Finish with ceiling white.

Will this work for graffiti? Yes, on walls and doors. Heavy spray paint may need two coats of primer.

Renting? Fix it before your move-out walk-through. Marker on walls is a common deposit deduction.
