Wall Touch-Up Guide: How to Fix Scuffs, Scratches & Chips
Got a scuff on the wall, a chip in the trim or a nick on a cabinet door? You don't need a gallon can, a tray and a brush to fix it. This guide shows how to touch up small spots around the house so they blend in, and how Mr. Brushable wall touch-up paint makes it a two-minute job.
Watch it work
Squeeze the bottle, the paint feeds into the built-in brush, and you brush it right over the mark. When you're done, cap it and put it back in the drawer.
What you can fix
- Walls: furniture rubs, chair marks, moving-day dings and patched nail holes.
- Trim and baseboards: vacuum bumps, shoe scuffs, pet scratches and chipped corners.
- Doors: kick marks, worn paint around the knob and dings on the edge.
- Cabinets: worn edges by the handles, chips from pots and scuffed toe-kicks.
Mr. Brushable is made for small repairs: the spots that bug you every day but aren't worth repainting a whole room for. For a large area, or a wall that has faded a lot, repainting the whole wall corner to corner will look better than a patch.
How to touch up a scuff or scratch
- Clean the spot. Wipe it with a damp cloth (or a mild degreaser on kitchen cabinets) and let it dry. Paint doesn't stick well to dust or grease.
- Prep chips and holes. Fill nail holes with spackle first. Lightly sand rough chip edges so the new paint lies flat.
- Squeeze and brush. Gently squeeze to load the brush. Cover just the mark with a thin coat and feather the edges outward so there's no hard line. On trim and doors, brush along the length of the piece.
- Let it dry, then check. If you can still see the mark, add a second thin coat. Two thin coats look better than one thick one.
Match the color and the shine
A touch-up blends in when both the color and the sheen (how shiny the paint is) match what's already there.
- Our stock colors are semi-gloss: White, Off-White, Antique White, Yellow, Blue, Green and Red. Semi-gloss is the usual finish for trim, doors and cabinets.
- Walls are often flat or eggshell, which is less shiny. If a semi-gloss patch catches the light on your wall, it's a sheen mismatch, not a color problem.
- Don't know your color? Check the lid of your leftover paint can for the color code, or use our free Color Match app to estimate a color and request custom-mixed paint. Photo matching is an estimate; lighting, camera settings and paint age affect the result. Custom Color Match paint is semi-gloss.
- Test first in a spot nobody sees, like behind a door or inside a cabinet.
Which applicator do I need?
- Small scuffs, chips and trim: built-in brush touch-up paint, available in multiple sizes and colors. See the product page for current prices.
- Larger flat patches: roller touch-up paint.
- Nail holes and dents: wall repair kit to patch, sand and paint.
- Marks that bleed through paint: stain-blocking primer, followed by compatible finish paint.
- Original leftover paint: empty refillable roller bottle for your own paint.
- Scratched wood: Wood Stain + Poly in Espresso or Golden Oak.
Choose the applicator for the size and type of repair, and test color and sheen in an inconspicuous spot first.
Common questions
Can I use Mr. Brushable on walls?
Yes. It's made for scuffs and scratches on walls, trim, doors, baseboards and cabinets. Match the color, sheen and existing texture, then test in a hidden spot. Use your original leftover paint in an empty applicator when you need the original finish.
Should I use a brush or a roller for touch-ups?
Choose the built-in brush bottle for trim, baseboards, door edges, cabinet corners and small chips. Choose the roller bottle for larger flat wall patches. Match the original surface texture as closely as possible, keep the repair small and test first. If a nail hole needs filling, start with the wall repair kit.
Can it fix nail holes?
Fill the hole with spackle first and let it dry. Then paint over the patch so it disappears.
Is it for inside or outside?
Both. Use it on interior and exterior surfaces like door frames and railings.
Why does my touch-up still show?
Usually it's one of three things: the sheen doesn't match, the coat was too thick, or the brush strokes went well past the mark. Stay inside the scuff, use thin coats and feather the edges. Walls that have faded over the years may not match even fresh paint in the original color.
How do I find my wall color?
Look for a color code on the lid or label of your leftover paint. No can? Snap a photo with Color Match to estimate a color and request custom-mixed paint. A photo cannot guarantee an exact match.
How much is shipping?
$3.99 on US orders under $35, and free on orders of $35 or more. In the Raleigh, NC area you can also choose free local pickup at checkout.
How do I store it between jobs?
Cap it tightly and keep it in a drawer, toolbox or cabinet so it's ready the next time something gets scuffed.
